Scottish artist David Adam lives in Brechin, a Cathedral city in Scotland with an ancient history. It is a community of great diversity where differences in social grace are evident within a small geographical area. Surrounding hilly farmland and wooded, aristocratic estates crash into council housing estates, housing caravan sites, prestigious suburbs and industrial parks before coming to rest in the ancient, sandstone built centre. A mix of people live in Brechin, some whose families have lived and worked there for generations, some who have been relocated from major towns to help in their social circumstances, some are European migrant workers and others commute to work in the major towns.
Born in 1956, the artist has lived in Brechin all of his life and has witnessed many of the changes that this community has endured; the suite of charcoal drawings entitled 'Postcard from Brechin' is a raw, yet personal testimony to this.
In contrast, to the deeper meanings surfacing in 'Postcard from Brechin', the outdoor pastel sketches 'Wildsketch' share an expressive and romantically Scottish landscape. The painting suite 'Three' explores landscape time passages and the interpretation of human social interactions. The inter dimensional suite of paintings 'Square' revels in repetition variations and modifications of layered forms all combined with backlight illumination that transforms a painting into a unique nocturne piece.
David Adam studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art 1974-79 Post Diploma Art, is a Professional of the Society of Scottish Artists and a member of the Scottish Mountaineering Club.
